If you are nearing the end of your pregnancy and you aren’t sure what is left to do, finding a pediatrician for your child and choosing a childcare provider should be at the top of your list. There are a lot of supplies that you’ll need and things that you want to do, but you’ll need a pediatrician within a couple of days of giving birth. Here are a few of the things you’ll want to consider when you are making these decisions, and choosing what will be the best for your baby.

Pediatrician or Family Doctor

You need to decide if you want to use a family doctor, perhaps one that you already use, or if you want to use a pediatrician. It can be difficult to find a pediatric office with openings, so you need to start looking in advance. Many parents prefer a pediatrician because they are a specialist in their field. Find a practice that has more than one pediatrician, and interview all of the ones who are taking new patients to see who you like best.

Child Care Center or In-Home Nanny

If you are returning to work and you know you will need someone to watch your child, even if it’s only part-time, then you need to plan it in advance. If you choose to have someone come to your home, remember you don’t have a backup if they get sick, and that your child then doesn’t have any other children to play with. They also are at your house unattended all day long.

If you choose a child care facility, the facility will always be open with workers, you don’t have to work around one person’s schedule, and they are required to meet state safety standards for childcare. The facility also has other children for your child to develop their social and physical skills with, and to interact with every day while they play.

If the baby comes early, you may need a pediatrician or someone to watch the child sooner than you originally expected. You want to make sure that the facility where you want to take your child for supervision, or the pediatrician you want to see your child has openings, so you have to plan everything out in advance so you can be prepared, and so you have time to look into backup options if your first choices aren’t available.
